Teaching Philosophy

To teach Art Education requires a great passion to guide ones students on their journey of exploring multiple ways of art making and seeing beyond the ordinary. Lessons should be designed around the body of students and what drives them to succeed. It is not always about creating the “prettiest” art but developing engaging lessons that challenge student’s critical thinking and allows them to express themselves.



I am interested in many different forms of art making and combining multiple materials to develop one's idea. I use my Art History Minor to develop interdisciplinary lessons with a history backing. My students explore a variety of art movements and artists, from ancient cultures to contemporary artists. I believe in project based learning, consuming one's self fully in their art, creating a piece that shows the process of making and the full body interaction with one's materials. Art becomes truly yours when you fully commit to it.



Community is an important aspect of teaching in my classroom. My goal is to build community in the art classroom; a space that is safe for experimentation and expression for her students. The sense of community expands beyond the four walls of the classroom through creating public community art, displaying the student’s art in and around the school for the public to become part of that art community. This includes collaboration with other subject areas.



I make use of center-based classrooms when submerging the students in long multi-step projects, in which different stages of a project are being run at the same time to maximize student engaged learning time. Students are responsible of their work and their actions. In a classroom that is a community of artists working on multiple projects at a time, it is essential that students see their peers as fellow artists, helping and influencing one another. I am not to be the master in the classroom, but a practicing artist and researcher alongside her students in a community of working artists.
