6th Grade Paper Mache
Students were able to make connections across different subject areas with this cross curricular project. In collaboration with the social studies teacher, I developed a standards based lesson where students got to explore the art of paper mache to tell a story about one of the Ancient Greek God or Goddesses. Students had to research about their god or goddess and their powers, relationship to other gods, symbols, etc. Students began with a detailed rough draft, then built an armature for their Amphora shaped vase, then used paper mache to build multiple layers in order for their vase to be sturdy, and finally completed the hand painting decorating process. The vases will be displayed at North Jersey Arts and Science Charter School’s annual Garden State Heritage Fair in June 2015.
